Embodied Analogies in Dance and Expressive Movement

Vicky Fisher

Our understanding of the world is informed by our sensory and motor bodily experiences. We move within, and are moved by our environment. This principle is at the root of grounded and embodied cognition, and dance practices offer rich but under-researched opportunities to explore and shed light on the role of movement and embodiment in cognition.

Vicky's research integrates approaches from dance practice, multimodal linguistics and cognitive psychology. Her current projects focus on the analogical and metaphorical relationships between dance-like bodily movement and ‘meaning’ from the perspectives of both production and comprehension.

Vicky is an independent guest researcher with the Multimodal Language and Cognition Group.
